There and back again
People who book holidays in the UK tend to get centred in on one place, and miss out fantastic opportunities to explore the country a little more. This is particularly the case for the millions of tourists who head into London every year, pass a week (or more) in the capital, and never get out and see some of the great British countryside.
However, with rail improvement works being done all the time, and a great publicity campaign, it's never been easier to get out and add a completely different experience into your city break.
London
There's so much information written about London that giving holiday advice is a little tricky. If you fancy a bit of luxury, or even just one or two nights in a different part of the city, it's definitely well worth splashing out on one of the fantastic Mayfair hotels. Whilst there is cheaper accommodation, Mayfair is beautiful, and after a long day sightseeing, you'll want to make the most of the luxurious surroundings of your hotel. Thankfully, if you look around you can get some great deals on Mayfair hotels from the likes of Millennium Hotels, so it doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg.
Cornwall
Cornwall is steeped in history and is England's best destination for outdoor activities. A train from Paddington down to Cornwall (Penzance, for example) will take five hours, but will only set you back £25, so it's definitely worth the investment. There are even sleeper trains available if you want to travel in complete comfort.
Once you're down in the south-west, there's so much to do you'll be spoilt for choice. Cornwall is well known for its surfing around Newquay, which is also a great place for a party in the summer time. Whereas Falmouth is a top destination for outdoor activities with the likes of Sea Kayaking, Archery and Coast-steering readily available. Truro is the most touristy town, and a good base for travelling around, particularly if you're using the trains. You should also check out St Michael's Mount and Tintagel if you can get to them – you may need to rent a car.
The best way of enjoying Cornwall is to get a nice B&B in one of the town centres and enjoy the stunning coastlines, the beaches and, of course, the fish and chips. There's so much to do, and it couldn't be a great contrast with London. So for a perfectly balanced taste of the best of England, it's worth getting out of the city for a couple of days and down to the South-West.
