Skiing in the French Alps

With so many fantastic resorts to choose from, the French Alps have been one of the most popular destinations with skiers not just from Europe but from around the world. The wide variety of accommodation and slopes to fit all abilities make the Alps a firm favourite for skiers of all abilities and on most budgets. Here’s one of the best resorts to visit; Val D’Isere.

Ranked amongst the world’s premier ski resorts, Val D’Isere lies three miles from the border with Italy and is also on the border of the Vanoise National Park. One of the best things about Val D’Isere is its variety of accommodation and character. Head to the eastern and central areas of the town and you’ll find the typical alpine chalet landscape whilst the western side is the newer part with more modern hotels and a buzzing nightlife. This variety means the resort is visited by all kinds of people, from those wanting a quiet stay in the chalet area to those burning the candle at both ends and enjoying the slopes in the day and the town by night.

Prices in Val D’Isere tend to be on the expensive side but that doesn’t have to mean your budget won’t fit. The quality of the slopes makes it a top place to visit if you’re travelling as a group of mixed-ability skiers because of the sheer number and variety of slopes. There are 133 slopes in total made up of 21 green, 63 blue, 35 red and 14 black, a selection which will wet any enthusiasts appetite! A lift pass will cost you around £220 in peak season, but you can offset this high price by saving money elsewhere, for example, make sure you book early to get the lowest prices. Check out websites such as Alpine Elements who offer great deals on ski holidays in the French Alps and look out for deals on ski chalets if you’re travelling with a group as these can often work out cheaper than hotels. Ski and boot hire should come to no more than around £80 too and again if you book early you’ll save money there too.

The quality of the restaurants in the town is one of its biggest selling points with everything from modest local restaurants to extravagant nouveau cuisine plus the usual selection of bars and a few clubs thrown in for good measure. And you’ll be sure to find the usual range of slope-side cafés and restaurants so you can grab a bite to eat before heading back out for the afternoon. Make sure also that you arrange travel insurance as skiing is an adventure sport that carries with it obvious dangers. Happy skiing!
