When you think of skiing you’ll usually think of a week-long trip to hit the slopes and get away from the hustle and bustle of normal life. However, a weekend of skiing in the French Alps is equally possible and many find that it fits in better with their busy lifestyles. Here are some top destinations and tips for a weekend break.
The French Alps are a fantastic destination for a weekend of skiing as the resorts are easily accessible from much of Europe and the travel connections in the area are second to none. Whether you’re using France’s excellent train network or flying in, you’ll be able to get in and out with ease.
You then have the choice to find a package deal with one of the many travel agents which operate in the Alps or book it all yourself. Both of these have their advantages. Booking early will save you a good deal of money but package deals are often much more affordable and for a weekend they’re definitely the better option. Websites such as igoski.co.uk come as recommended for ski weekends. Make sure you book your ski hire early so that you don’t have to worry about it when you’re there, just book online, turn up and ski.
The French Alps offer some of the best slopes in the world. Tignes is one of the most popular, sitting at 1550m, the quality of the snow is fantastic and offers a less busy town than the better known Val D’Isere just up the mountain. Tignes has a good network of ski runs, with 1 green, 40 blue, 16 red and 10 black, with the highest run at 3450m and you can also choose to ski in the Espace Killy area which lies between Tignes and Val D’Isere. The area also offers good off-piste skiing and the beautiful Tignes Le Lac has scenery second-to-none as you ski down the mountain towards the stunning lake.
Courchevel is another premier resort in the French Alps and another great one for a weekend break as it has its own airport for ease of access. 150km of runs made up from 27 greens, 44 blues, 38 reds and 10 blacks make it a top destination for skiers of all abilities and gives you freedom to choose from many types of slope. The town is popular all year round and you’ll find competitive rates on hotels and ski hire as well as a great collection of restaurants, bars and other après-ski options.
Finally, remember to take out adequate medical insurance before you travel as skiing is an adventure sport and can be dangerous.
